Social Tango

Making their White Bird debut — and appearing for one night only — Social Tango Project arrives from Buenos Aires with a performance that goes straight to the soul of Argentinian tango. Founded by Agustina Videla and Ramón de Oliveira César, the company’s production Social Tango traces a woman’s early struggles as she steps into the world of tango, evolving into a story of personal transformation and the discovery of a community united by the power of human connection. The performance is melodic and intricate, backed by five live musicians filling the room as ten dancers move through a world that feels unmistakably alive. Social Tango has been invited to perform in many of the most prestigious venues in North America, including Jacob’s Pillow and New York City Center.

Uniquely conceived by choreographer Agustina Videla, Social Tango Project is a stunning interactive and immersive dance performance from Buenos Aires that encourages the audience to embrace the tango and make it their own.

Social Tango Project centers on Argentine tango, a social dance that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the working‑class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay. The company blends dance, live music, and cinematic projections to bring tango’s social roots to the stage. A cast of ten dancers performs tango’s intimate partnering, driven by subtle shifts of weight and shared balance rather than large jumps or turns. Dancers glide across the floor in intricate walking patterns, punctuated by sharp accents such as ganchos (hooking leg movements), ochos (figure-eight pivots), sweeping leg flicks, pauses, and close, spiraling turns. Improvisation is central to the work, making each performance unique. Five live musicians and the participation of local tango dancers further shape each city’s performance. The experience extends beyond the show itself, with audiences invited to take part in an onstage tango class and a milonga (social gathering through Argentine Tango), transforming the theater into a shared social space.

Social Tango Project is a dance company founded in 2012 by Ramón de Oliveira César and Agustina Videla. Its first production, Social Tango, blends dance, live music, and cinematic projections to tell the story of women who discover tango and choose to embark on the journey of learning to dance—a celebration of the power of human connection. Curated by artistic director Agustina Videla in collaboration with the host institution, the company seeks to share its artistry, promote inclusivity, and create meaningful cultural experiences. Social Tango has been well-received nationally and internationally for bringing the rare illustration of the milonga experience (a social gathering where tango is danced) to the live concert stage and won the National Dance Project Touring Award in 2015.

Artistic Director and Choreographer Agustina Videla works closely with local tango schools and teachers to make Social Tango possible. She began her career as a tango dancer representing Argentina at the Universal Exhibition in Lisbon (1998). Since then, she has toured extensively, offering classes and performances in major cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Agustina is highly aware of the meaning that tango has in the lives of so many people, it allows us to connect with others, but it also makes us part of a community. It’s that communal magic that Videla seeks to emulate with the aptly named Social Tango.
