Botanica

A Portland favorite is back. MOMIX returns with Botanica — a surprising, joyful, and revelatory journey through the beauty of the natural world. Revolving around the imagery and magic of the four seasons, this work reveals nature’s changing forms through MOMIX’s signature combination of dance, illusion, and theatricality. Botanica is set to a score ranging from birdsong to Vivaldi, animated by spectacular costumes, luminous projections, and giant puppetry designed by Michael Curry — the celebrated Oregon production designer behind Cirque du Soleil and the Metropolitan Opera. Imagination takes the stage as a treat for audiences of all ages. Having danced over 10,000 performances worldwide, MOMIX has long proven they are a standout — and Botanica is among their most enchanting achievements.

Created in 2009 and revived in 2026, BOTANICA is a lush, surreal journey through nature’s changing imagery, following the rhythms of the seasons and the passing of a day. Set to an eclectic score that ranges from birdsong to Vivaldi, the piece blends athletic movement with larger-than-life spectacle.

MOMIX’s Botanica is a visually lush journey inspired by the rhythms and imagery of the natural world. Known for their imaginative stagecraft, the dancers create ever-shifting landscapes using technical contemporary dance, sculptural partnering, and illusion-driven choreography. Throughout the piece, the performers transform into plant-like, animalistic, and elemental forms, aided by striking lighting, projections, and inventive costumes and props. Moses Pendleton’s choreography blends humor, surrealism, and awe, showing off playful moments as well as hypnotic visual tableaux. Botanica unfolds set by set like a series of living paintings—an immersive theatrical experience that the whole family can enjoy!

MOMIX is an internationally renowned dance and visual illusion company, under the direction of Moses Pendleton, presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty for more than forty-five years. MOMIX’s multimedia fusion of illusion and theatricality creates a dance experience unlike any other, representing human beauty found in connection to the non-human. With a focus on an inventive approach to dance as visual poetry, MOMIX carefully crafts each performance as a fusion of nature, music, and the human form. Momix has toured in 55 countries and performed at major corporate events for companies like Fiat and Mercedes Benz.

Moses Pendleton has been one of America’s most innovative and widely performed choreographers and directors for almost 50 years.  A co-founder of the ground-breaking Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1971, he formed his own company, MOMIX, with Alison Chase in 1980 which rapidly established an international reputation for inventive and often illusionistic choreography. The troupe has been creating new work under his direction and touring worldwide for four decades. Moses Pendleton has created new works for the Arizona Ballet and the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and he teamed up with Danny Ezralow and David Parsons, both former MOMIX dancers, to choreograph AEROS with the Romanian National Gymnastics Team. Moses Pendleton also choreographed The Doves of Peace, featuring Diana Vishneva and 50 Russian ballerinas, for the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi.
